In the Middle Ages, Damme was the port of Bruges, in the seventeenth century a fortified stronghold with the famous 'Damse zevenster' (Damme seven-star), and today a charming book village and gastronomic center. Literary figures such as Jacob van Maerlant, Tijl Uilenspiegel, and Charles De Coster are inextricably linked to Damme.
