In the Middle Ages, Damme was the port of Bruges, in the seventeenth century a fortified stronghold with the famous 'Damse zevenster' (Damme seven-star), and today a charming book village and gastronomic center. Literary figures such as Jacob van Maerlant, Tijl Uilenspiegel, and Charles De Coster are inextricably linked to Damme.

The unique canal landscape and the impressive reconstruction of the bastion near the Damse Vaart canal make the city even more special.
